Let’s understand the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa Subclass 482

The Australian government has introduced the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa Subclass 482, a streamlined pathway for addressing labor shortages by enabling employers to hire skilled workers from overseas. Replacing the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) Visa Subclass 482 on December 7, 2024, the SID visa reflects Australia’s evolving workforce needs.

Why Was the SID Visa Introduced?

The SID visa was designed to modernize Australia’s skilled migration program, ensuring employers have access to highly qualified talent when local recruitment efforts fall short. This change simplifies the process for employers and workers alike while addressing critical skill shortages across key industries.

Transition from TSS to SID

If your employer submitted a TSS nomination before December 7, 2024, and you haven’t yet lodged the associated visa application, your nomination will automatically transition to a SID nomination upon approval. You can then lodge an application for the SID visa.

For existing TSS visa holders, the visa remains valid under the conditions it was granted. If this applies to you, please refer to the Temporary Skill Shortage (Short-term) visa page.

Key Features of the SID Visa

  • Employer-Focused: Enables businesses to hire internationally when local candidates are unavailable.
  • Broad Eligibility: Occupations eligible under the SID visa can be found on the relevant Skills in Demand list.
  • Validity: The visa allows temporary residence for skilled workers and their families.

What Does the new Subclass 482 Visa Offer?

This visa enables you to:

  • Work in Australia for your sponsor for up to 4 years, or 5 years if you’re a Hong Kong passport holder.
  • Study in Australia, though government assistance is not available.
  • Travel freely to and from Australia during the visa’s validity.
  • Apply for permanent residency, if eligible.

Additionally, your family can live, study, and work in Australia while you hold this visa.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Subclass 482 Visa, you must:

  • Be sponsored by an Australian employer.
  • Work in a nominated occupation listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
  • Meet health, character, and English language proficiency standards.

Costs and Additional Expenses

  • Main applicant: AUD 3,115.
  • Dependents aged 18 and over: AUD 3,115 each.
  • Dependents under 18: AUD 780 each.

Length of Stay

  • This is a temporary visa, with durations depending on your sponsorship:

    • Up to 4 years for most applicants.
    • Up to 5 years for Hong Kong or British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders.

If your visa is nearing expiration, your employer can submit a new nomination, and you can apply for a new visa. Alternatively, you might qualify for permanent residency through pathways like the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186).

Including Family Members

Family members, referred to as secondary applicants, can be included in your visa application. Eligible family members may include:

  • Your spouse or de facto partner.
  • Dependent children or stepchildren under certain conditions.

Secondary applicants must meet all health and character requirements. Family members not included in the initial application can later apply to join you in Australia.

Application Process and Conditions

You can apply from within or outside Australia, provided you are not in immigration clearance. Applicants in Australia must hold a substantive visa or bridging visa.

Upon visa approval, you’ll receive a digital visa linked to your passport. There are specific obligations:

  • Employment: Begin work within 90 days of visa grant or entry into Australia.
  • Compliance: Adhere to visa conditions and Australian laws.
