Understanding Job Occupation Lists in Australia & the New SID Visa (Subclass 482)

Australia’s Job Occupation Lists are key to navigating the migration process. These lists outline the professions in demand across the country, helping identify which skilled workers are eligible for specific visas.

What is the Job Occupation List?

The occupation list is a government tool used to match skilled migrants with job shortages. Each visa is tied to specific lists that reflect Australia’s workforce needs. For example:

  • Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): Focused on essential skills.
  • Other lists (e.g., Regional or Specialist) vary based on geography or expertise.

What’s New with the SID Visa (Subclass 482)?

The Subclass 482 visa will be rebranded as the Skills In Demand (SID) visa. This new format includes three streams:

  1. Core Skills Pathway: For roles on the updated CSOL. Minimum salary: AUD $73,150.
  2. Specialist Pathway: Open to nearly all professions with a salary of AUD $135,000/year.
  3. Labor Agreement Stream: For employers with approved labor agreements.

Key Changes:

  • Standardized English requirements: IELTS overall 5 (minimum 5 in each band) or PTE 36 in all sections.
  • Work experience now must be demonstrated at the time of application, not at the time of decision.
  • Greater flexibility to switch employers without resetting the permanent residency pathway.
