Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482): What You Need to Know – important changes from Dec 07, 2024
As of December 7, 2024, the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482) has been replaced by the Skills in Demand (SID) visa. This change aims to streamline Australia’s migration system and address critical labor shortages by bringing skilled workers into the country where no suitable local candidates are available. Here’s what you need to know about the TSS visa and how the transition to the SID visa may affect you.
Transition to the SID Visa
If you or your employer lodged a TSS nomination or visa application before December 7, 2024, your application will still be processed under the rules in place at the time of submission. However, if your employer submitted a TSS nomination and you did not lodge the associated visa application before the transition date, the approved nomination will automatically be deemed a SID nomination. You can then apply for the new SID visa.
TSS Visa Overview
The TSS visa, under the short-term stream, was designed to fill temporary skill gaps in Australia by enabling employers to sponsor skilled workers. If you hold or applied for a TSS visa before December 7, 2024, it remains valid until its expiry date. Here’s what this visa allows:
- Duration of Stay: Up to two years, or up to four years if International Trade Obligations (ITOs) apply. Hong Kong passport holders may stay for up to five years.
- Rights and Benefits:
- Live, work, and study in Australia temporarily.
- Have eligible dependent family members accompany you.

Obligations for TSS Visa Holders
To maintain compliance during your stay, you must:
- Maintain Health Insurance: Ensure you and your family have adequate health insurance coverage while in Australia.
- Comply with Visa Conditions: Follow all conditions specific to the short-term stream under which your
visa was granted.
- Inform of Changes: Notify the Department of Home Affairs about significant changes in circumstances, such as a new residential address, a change in family composition, or updated passport details.
- Plan Your Departure: Leave Australia when your visa expires unless you have been granted another visa.
If your family did not accompany you initially, they can apply as subsequent entrants while your visa remains valid. Dependents must:
- Maintain health insurance.
- Intend to remain part of your family unit.
- Abide by any additional conditions communicated upon visa approval.

Changes in Your Situation
Life events, such as pregnancies, births, or deaths, can impact your visa conditions. It’s crucial to promptly report these changes to avoid any issues with your visa status.
